Top Five Ways To Proofread and Edit Your Thesis

5 Ways to Proofread Your Thesis

Proofreading is a critical step to any paper, but it can be tricky to know how to approach it. What method do you use to proof your paper? Will you try it yourself, or will you trust someone else to perfect your paper? Whenever you need to proofread your thesis, there are several methods you can choose.

1. Do it yourself.

Unfortunately, this is the most dangerous choice out of your available options. You may be an excellent proofreader, but when you’re as close to an assignment as you are to your thesis, it’s easy to overlook things. You know what you mean and you know what your work should say; that can trick your mind into missing grammatical and spelling mistakes. Nonetheless, proofreading a thesis yourself can still work, though it may not be the smartest choice.

2. Have a friend do it.

This is also a pretty dangerous avenue. Even if your friend is a studious English major, he or she isn’t a complete expert. English spelling and grammatical rules are extremely diverse and hard to master – even if you’re a native English speaker. Entrusting a student-friend to catch every single little error may not work out to your advantage. However, it is far better to have a new pair of eyes look over your work; plus, a friend can also identify whether or not your thesis is clear.

3. Ask a professor.

This is not exactly option number one for most students, strictly because professors aren’t usually available for proofreading. The professor relevant to your thesis is probably even less available. When you can find a professor willing and available to give your thesis a once over, though, take advantage of the opportunity!

4. Run it through a proofreading program.

Amazingly, there are several programs – both for sale and free through the internet – that will supposedly proofread your document for you. For the expensive, top-of-the-line products, this can be a smart move. However, free internet services aren’t exactly as dependable. Plus, you’ll be spending a lot of money proofreading this way. In the end, you’ll have to decide if it’s worth the money.

5. Use an online proofreading service.

This can typically be a very dependable proofreading avenue, but it comes with its own dangers. Some proofreading and writing services are actually fronts for scams, so be extremely careful when selecting an unknown online service. Otherwise, many of these services are highly dependable and have a great reputation for proofreading.
